Aion is a virtual reality immersive , work-in-progress, that explores the subjective and cyclical nature of time, inspired by mythology and a personal reflection on loss. The project blends Nordic aesthetics—glacial landscapes, traditional patterns, and polar lights—with ethereal futurism, featuring AI-generated hybrid characters, luminescent textures, and floating structures to create a universe where tradition and technology coexist.
Guided by a mysterious figure, the viewer journeys through a sacred dome toward a cosmic fountain of time. Upon immersing themselves, they lose all spatio-temporal bearings and encounter fragments of memories and landscapes, illustrating the idea that time is a deeply personal experience.
Concept
Aion is an immersive virtual reality (VR) installation that questions the subjective nature of time. Through a sensory and narrative experience, the project explores the idea that time, as we perceive it, is a human construct, while "real time" is a deeply personal experience, lived differently by each individual. The work draws inspiration from loss, memory, and the fluidity of states of consciousness, in response to the recent passing of my brother—an event that shattered my perception of temporal linearity.
Synopsis
The experience begins with a guide character who accompanies the viewer to a sacred dome, where a hybrid figure—part physician, part oracle—resides. At the center of the dome lies a symbolic water source, representing the "basin of time." The viewer, invited to remove their shoes, enters a suspended inflatable cocoon (made of transparent plastic filled with liquid) before putting on the VR headset. Once immersed, they dive into this water-time, where spatial references vanish: up and down dissolve, and the body floats in a dreamlike space.
The narration, both poetic and scientific, guides the viewer through temporal layers: first into total light, then into soundscapes and visual landscapes evoking the cosmic or cellular infinite. The water becomes a space where boundaries dissolve, and time warps, stretches, or contracts, following an emotional logic rather than a physical one.
